Bilingual Not Effective, Dual Language as the Solution

According to recent research result, bilingual education system in Indonesia is less effective because it neglects Indonesian language. The impact will be felt when children go to the higher level education. Dr. David Freeman, Professor of curriculum and Instruction, and Dr. Yvonne Freeman, Professor of Bilingual Education from the United States, expressed  their research result regarding bilingual education emphasizing more on the foreign languages in schools. According to Freeman, a mastery of foreign languages is important, but not to ignore first language or mother language, in this case is English.

That was delivered by husband and wife Freeman in a seminar held by the school High/Scope School of Indonesia about 'Dual Language, Theory and Effective programs' Wednesday, 13 May. This seminar held in order to commemorate National Education Day. In the seminar, also explained the research result from Thomas & Collier in 1997 toward students in the United States. Children whose initial education using first language (English) have academic level higher than other children whose initial education using foreign language (Spanish) .

Awaring the importance of first language besides English,  Dual Language program is considered as the solution of academic problems that will be faced by children in the future. The Dual Language program refers to additives program, that is co-ordinating the use of language first and foreign languages.

This is closely related to the early formation concep of children's academic. Children who have strong academic concept in his first language, can have a good academic ability in foreign languages. But, on the contrary, children who do not have strong academic concepts in first languag, also do not have strong academic ability in both the language. Still related to Freeman’s research in Washington, United States, shows that children who are running the Dual Language program, in which their academic ability is strong, whether in his first language and foreign languages, are more successful and high paid when working in companies.

According to Antarina S. F Amir, Managing Director of High/Scope School of Indonesia, in practicing Dual Language program, the lesson system using two languages. There is a subject that uses Indonesian language and some subjects that uses English. And in reviews, view, and preview that use other languages. The other way to apply the Dual Language setting ‘Language of The Day' alternately between English and Bahasa Indonesia. Thus, children understand the concept in both Indonesian and English. Children’s ability in speaking Indonesian is sharpened, too.

Until this time, High/Scope School of Indonesia is first school in Indonesia which uses Dual Language program. According to Antarina, this program has been already done during the last two years, but the result is still cannot able to be seen. "Most schools who tried to run the program and failed are those who are not patience in testing Dual Language in their schools. Indeed, it needs patience, because the result could be seen four years later, depending on each children" said Antarina.

Assalamu’alaikum Wr. Wb.  Salam sejahtera bagi kita semua Yang terhormat kepala sekolah Yang saya hormati Bapak/Ibu Guru serta staf  Tata Usaha Dan teman-teman yang saya cintai Marilah kita panjatkan puji syukur kehadirat Allah SWT yang telah melimpahkan nikmat-Nya sehingga kita dapat berkumpul disini dan pada hari ini. Sekarang  saya akan menyampaikan pidato tentang Narkoba. Narkoba merupakan sebuah istilah yang berarti narkotika, obat terlarang dan zat adiktif. Sebenarnya, narkoba pada dasarnya di butuhkan oleh dunia kedokteran untuk membius pasien atau meringankan rasa sakit. namun, seiring dengan perkembangannya, narkoba di salah gunakan sebagai pelarian dari masalah atau sekedar mengikuti teman. Sebuah survei mencatat 4 juta penduduk Indonesia adalah pengguna narkoba,dengan kata lain 2 dari 100 orang pernah merasakan barang terlarang ini.  Lebih mengejutkan lagi  diperkirakan di kota jakarta 1 dari 3 orang anak muda adalah pengguna narkoba. penelitian  (ILO) Organisasi Buruh Internasional  perwakilan Indonesia memberikan hasil  yaitu dari 4 % pengguna narkoba di negara indonesia adalah anak di bawah umur 17 tahun. Bahkan Beberapa remaja ikut terlibat dalam pembuatan barang terlarang ini kemudian diperdagangkan oleh anak berumur  13 dan 15 tahun. Menurut Ketua BIN ( Badan Narkotika Indonesia) ada sekitar 7.000 siswa SMP yang memakai narkoba, tak kurang dari 10.000 murid SLTA dan bahkan sekitar 800 murid SD pun telah mencicipi barang haram ini. Data tersebut seharusnya menjadi bahan renungan bagi banyak pihak, bagi orangtua, pemerintah, sekolah maupun siswa itu sendiri agar lebih berhati - hati dalam menghadapi pergaulan bebas yang bisa menjerumuskan kita kepada dunia gelap narkoba. Untuk itu kita harus melakukan pencegahan diantaranya: 1. Pilihlah teman yang baik 2. Jangan memendam masalah, lebih baik di sampaikan kepada orang yang kita pandang bijak seperti guru,  3. Mengetahui bahaya narkoba terhadap kesehatan. Lalu apa bahaya dari penggunaan narkoba? 1. Menurunkan kualitas otak 2. Menjadikan badan kurus 3. Lebih mudah terkena penyakit 4. rawan kena HIV AIDS Ada banyak faktor yang menyebabkan seseorang menggunakan narkoba diantaranya adalah: 1. Pergaulan bebas 2. Rasa ingin tahu 3. Tekanan masalah  4. Broken home Sangat disayangkan jika masa depan para pemuda Indonesia menjadi hancur karena narkoba. Perlu adanya kerjasama antara pemerintah dengan menggiatkan kembali kegiatan kepemudaan, kemudian sekolah dengan lebih menekankan pada pendidikan mental dan sikap bukan hanya akademis. kemudian orangtua untuk selalu membimbing dan memperhatikan perkembangan anaknya Dan terakhir  pribadi kita masing-masing. Kita tak akan rela jika masa depan kita terenggut hanya karena kebahagiaan sesaat yang menyesatkan. Mendekatlah kepada Tuhan, Lebih dekat kepada Orangtua, terbuka kepada orangtua atau guru jika ada masalah dan kemudian pilihlah teman yang dapat memberikan kita ilmu bukan sekedar bersenang-senang. Now I will deliver a speech about drugs. (Literal) (Firstly, let’s say thanks to our god who has been giving merciful, so that we can attend our program today. In this occasion, I’d like to deliver my speech about drugs.) Narkoba is a term that means narcotics, drugs and addictive substances. Actually, the drug is essentially needed by the medical world to anesthetize the patient or alleviate pain. However, in line with its development, drug misuse as an escape from problems or just follow a friend caused of curiosity. (Addition) A survey record 4 million people in Indonesia are drug users, in other words, 2 out of 100 people have felt these prohibited items. Even more surprising is estimated in Jakarta 1 from 3 young people are drug users. A research from (ILO) International Labor Organization representatives Indonesia provide results that 4 % of drug users in the country of Indonesia is a child under the age of 17 years. More susceptible to disease 4. prone to get HIV AIDS (Literal) (What are the negative effects of using drugs?) There are many factors that cause a person to use drugs are: 1. Promiscuity 2. Curiosity 3. Pressure problems 4. Broken home  (Pure Borrowing) (There are many factors which can lead someone to use drugs) It is unfortunately if the future of the youth of Indonesia be destroyed because of drugs. Should there needs cooperation between the government to revive the youth activities, and schools with more emphasis on education and the mental attitude not just academic. Later the parents to always guide the development of their children and pay attention. The last is ourselves. (Literal) We will not be satisfied if our future taken away just because of momentary happiness that is misleading. Draw near to God, closer to parents, open to parents or teachers if there is a problem and then choose a friend who can give us the science is not just fun (Creation) (We will not break our bright future just because of misleading happiness for a while.
